A DRIVER has called for an investigation after a railway crossing barrier came down on a driver’s car near Kidlington.

In April the level crossing at Sandy Lane malfunctioned with a barrier getting stuck and a team of engineers were called by Network Rail to fix the fault.

Last Thursday Cathy Taylor, 61, from Shabbington, near Thame, was behind a driver whose car was hit by a barrier at about 2.30pm.

She said: “I saw the orange light indicating the barriers would be coming down but he had already gone past.

“There was insufficient time between the orange light, the red flashing lights and the barriers coming down.

“The train going towards Oxford went past when the man’s car was still under the barrier.

“Then another driver lifted the barrier up - it was very concerning and I reported the incident to Network Rail after British Transport Police came.”

In an email to Network Rail the retired mum-of-two wrote: “I have noticed that there have been accidents on this crossing in the past.

“Would you please reset the timings on this crossing before someone else is killed.”

Thomas Pizzey, 85, was killed when the car he was in was struck by a Freightliner train at the crossing in January 2013.

Network Rail revealed afterwards the crossing had failed 21 times in 2012 - about once every fortnight.

It has not yet commented on the latest incident.
