THE 1,160 runners pounded through the scenic grounds of Blenheim Palace may be still recovering, but hospital bosses and organisers of the OX5 run are already setting out plans for next year’s race.

It is expected about £100,000 will have been raised by entrants to the run in aid of the Oxford Children’s Hospital.

But chief nurse Catherine Stoddart said Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust hoped the event would next year go on to break the £1m barrier of total money raised since the event started 14 years ago.

The 2017 race, which funds medical equipment, toys, games and specialist nurses, will also mark 10 years since the children’s hospital was built.

Ms Stoddart completed the fivemile run on Sunday along with teams of families and friends.

The 50-year-old said: “With all the fundraising for this year’s event we should be in a position where we can reach £1m after next year’s race.

“That would be an amazing achievement.

“It was great to see so many of our staff doing their bit to raise money for the children in our hospital. There were lots of family members as well, which was amazing.

“It had a great atmosphere and felt like a community running.”
