THERE could be 24,445 new homes built across the Cherwell District Council area after councillors voted to approve modifications to the local plan.

The plan had to be revised after planning inspector Nigel Payne said in June that the council’s housing target may have been too low.

The council had proposed to build 16,750 homes, significantly lower than the 22,800 which were recommended in the strategic housing market assessesment (SHMA).

The modified plan has an additional 7,695 proposed homes and will now be sent back to the planning inspector to be signed off.

Council lead member for planning Michael Gibbard said: “We give our support to the amended plan and the decision on whether it can be implemented will now be made by Mr Payne.”
