MORE people who care for friends and relatives were found in Oxfordshire than anywhere else in the UK during a carers’ awareness week.
Carers Oxfordshire identified 3,000 people as a result of a national campaign, which kicked off with Carers’ Week on June 9 to 15.
The organisation, funded by Oxfordshire County Council, estimates there are 61,000 unpaid carers in the county but it knows of only 18,000.
During Carers Week it held an information fair in Oxford’s Bonn Square, set up stands at supermarkets and held events like tea parties.

Leaflets and posters were also placed in 116 county pharmacies.
Carers UK director of policy and public affairs Emily Holzhausen said Oxfordshire was an “inspiration”.
She said: “Carers Oxfordshire and the pharmacies have done an amazing job together in identifying carers in the run-up to and during Carers’ Week 2014. We have never known so many carers identified locally in one short initiative.”
She said: “Time and again, research with families and close friends who care for relatives who become ill, frail or disabled say they wish they had known about help earlier.”
