Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 43-year-old man died nearly a month after being assaulted.

Martins Rudzitis was assaulted and robbed in People’s Park in Banbury on July 11 at about 9.30pm.

He died on August 3 and a post-mortem examination five days later found it was a result of head injuries.

Two Banbury men, aged 19 and 20, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and released on bail until September 25.

Thames Valley Police, who released the information today, are now appealing for witnesses to the park.

Det Sgt Ali Driver said: “This is quite a complex investigation and it has taken some time for officers to piece together the movements of Mr Rudzitis in the days prior to his death.

“What we have recently established is that, at about 9.30 pm on July 11 in People’s Park, Banbury, Mr Rudzitis was the victim of a serious assault and robbery at the main entrance to People’s Park near Horsefair / North Bar. He managed to walk away from the assault but died on August 3.

“It was still light at the time and we are aware that other members of the public may have seen what happened or have been pestered by the offenders as they entered or exited the park. We would urge anyone with information about this to contact police.”
