A THREE-car crash on the A40 left a man needing hospital treatment for serious leg injuries.

Three people were taken to Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital for treatment – one with serious leg injuries. The injuries of the other two are unknown.

Traffic was backed up to the B4022 Witney East and to the B4449 Eynsham Roundabout after police closed the road causing tailbacks to Long Hanborough.

The road was re-opened at about 4.45pm.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighters freed a man trapped in one of the cars. The Thames Valley and Chiltern air ambulance was called but land ambulances took the three to hospital. A witness said the accident happened where the A40 carriageway narrowed near Eynsham.

The crash marked a day of chaos for some Oxfordshire commuters yesterday.

Botley Road was partially blocked after a blue Honda crashed into traffic lights near McDonalds at 7.20am.

At Reading two broken down trains caused delays for several hours on First Great Western and CrossCounty services between Oxford and London and the south coast.

At 6.20am a Volkswagen Polo crashed into a ditch on the M40 southbound between junction 7 and Junction 6 near Milton Common.

On Tuesday a pedestrian in his 20s was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital after a collision with a car in Barns Road at 6pm.

Oxford Spires says...

The basic single carriageway on the A40 leading west from Oxford to Witney and then onto to Cheltenham, apart from some minor dual carriageway, is a total disgrace in the 21st century of transport progress.

It has daily continuous tailbacks in both directions. It has congestion problems also because the villages alongside that are ever expanding with side roads leading to and from them have to have traffic lights. No proper planning has ever considered this factor which hold up moving traffic going west. It is also the only route from Oxford going west and it has to take commuters in cars, buses and heavy goods vehicles. The people of Witney and the surrounding villages on route deserve better as daily they waste their time and money queuing. Some years back there was a fatal collision just near the first A34 flyover on the A40 which left 4 children with no parents, one may remember one of those killed was Oxford United footballer Peter Houseman and his wife along with another married couple.

Who the hell would want to live and work in either direction facing this every day with no proper road infrastructure in place to serve those?

Absolutely totally correct, and still we have Muppets like Hudspeth leading Oxon CC and coming out with totally stupid remarks like drive to Long Hanborough and catch the train. Witney, Carterton and even Eynsham have massive targets to meet over the next ten years or so and still no infra structure to improve things put in place. These people need hanging at dawn for dereliction of duty and neglect towards the population of this area spanning out as far as Cheltenham along the A40 corridor.

It will only get worse and the Witney MP has done nothing to fight the cause on behalf of his population. Bone idle and obviously couldn't care, we are just a voting convenience to get the man into office, total twerp.
Its about time change came about for all the right reasons and the "powers that be" have done nothing other than talk about things for over thirty years, and in the meantime build on every scrap of land they can leaving no room for manouvre in years to come. What short sighted useless idiots. I have written to Cameron on several occasions with sensible proposals and not received one reply. No wonder the the rest of Europe laugh at us when we can't even sort out our own traffic problems yet we still attempt to be some global power.
