DRUIDS and pagans celebrated the summer solstice by watching the sun rise over Oxfordshire’s ancient Rollright Stones.

Sue Small, 67, from Abingdon, pictured above, was among those who visited the Neolithic stone circle, in Little Rollright, near Chipping Norton, at around 4.30am on Saturday, the longest day of the year.

She said: “It was an absolutely beautiful sunrise.”

Youngsters give it plenty of welly at fair

HARRY Clark, pictured, wangs a welly during the Christ Church Cathedral School Meadow Fair and Sports Day.

The six-year-old, of Hyde Place, Summertown, was enjoying his class’s stall, where youngsters tried to throw a welly into a hoop to win a prize.
The event took place on Saturday in Oxford’s Merton Field and also featured races, a picnic and many other stalls.
Harry said: “It was really fun”.

Rugfest is a Labour of Love

SINGER Pat Kane from pop duo Hue and Cry entertained the crowd during this year’s Rugfest at Wallingford Rugby Club at the weekend.
The annual event took place on Friday and Saturday and also featured hot food, festival stalls and a camp site.
Hue and Cry shot to fame in the late 80s, with Labour of Love reaching number six in the  charts.

Bridge leads to a field of dreams

A NEW bridge has been officially opened linking Christ Church Meadow with the college’s playing fields over the River Cherwell.
Cutting the ribbon on the 28m Jubilee Bridge on Saturday were alumni and benefactors Martin Alderson Smith and Christopher Ainsley, who donated the bridge, Mr Ainsley’s twin 10-year-old daughters Juliet and Lily, along with other family members.
The college would not reveal how much the bridge had cost.

Fitness fanatics respond to appeal for funds

PERSONAL trainers held a fitness and obstacle course in aid of Wantage First Responders on Saturday. Kirsty Herring, 26, centre, was among those to take part in the activity day, which was held by JLPT at Spike Lodge Farm, in Manor Road, Wantage.
