I REFER to my letter to The Press of March 21 regarding the illegal parking of vehicles on grass verges. At the time of writing, I also wrote to the council leader of City of York Council about this issue. I received no reply.

In order to try to deter illegal parking on the grass verge, I therefore occasionally left a wheelie bin on the grass.

I then received a letter from the community enforcement officer at City of York Council stating that a complaint had been made about the wheelie bin on the grass.

The letter cited the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and stated “...the council cannot permit obstructions on the verges in this manner, as they interfere with grass cutting and could pose a safety hazard’.

Obviously, none of this applies to vehicles illegally parked on the grass verges.

This appears to be yet another example of local government hypocrisy.

So much for York Pride: in future, I will not bother wasting time and effort cutting the verges.
