A POLICE boss has been urged to find cash to continue crime reduction initiatives.

Councillors fear funds for programmes run by council-run community safety partnerships will be cut from April 2015.

Current schemes include street wardens and sport activities in North Oxfordshire to keep youngsters out of trouble.

Concerns were raised to David Carroll, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley, at a meeting yesterday.

Cherwell District Council’s Mike Grant said: “This year, it’s business as usual because we are using reserves.”

But he said of 2015/16: “Inevitably something will fall off the table. We would like to see these sort of crime prevention initiatives carry on in the future.”

District and county councillor Kieron Mallon said: “Community safety partnerships across the whole of the Thames Valley have been proved invaluable in reducing crime and helping the police forces to reach targets.

“We would say for a small part of the budget, to enable this partnership to continue, you increase it ten fold on the results you get back to hit your targets.”

Concerns were raised at a meeting of Thames Valley Police and Crime Panel in Bodicote, which was looking at police priorities to 2017.

Mr Carroll was unavailable for comment.
