IN this most significant of years, silence filled the halls of Christ Church Cathedral as the names of fallen war heroes were read out.

The first Turning the Pages ceremony of 2014 marked this year as a century since the outbreak of the First World War.

The ceremony – which began in 1996 and is held four times a year – names those who fought and died as members of the Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars and the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in the first global conflict and also the Second World War.

During the ceremony, which started at 11am, 20 names were read out by the Hussars’ Major Julian Webster and the Light Infantry’s Brian Cox.

It ended with a two-minute silence accompanied by The Last Post.

The ceremony was conducted by Canon Roland Meredith.

Chairman of Oxfordshire Royal British Legion Jim Lewendon said: “This ceremony means a lot to the people of Oxfordshire.

“Anyone is always welcome to attend and we do hope that this year, with it being the centenary, more people will be interested in what we do here.”

Canon Meredith said: “It would be wonderful if more people wanted to get involved this year.

“Obviously, the First World War was 100 years ago so we don’t get as many people linked with it coming. “But if anyone has any relatives they would like to hear the name of being read out, then they are welcome to contact us about it.”

The next ceremony will be at 11am on May 3 at the cathedral in St Aldate’s.
