SIR - In October, 2006, I had a letter printed in the Telegraph & Argus headed "Insult to Democratic Process" stating that I thought it unfair that politicians should be allowed to change parties part way through their term in office without seeking re-election. The example I used was Councillor Rupert Oliver.

I was shocked then, when I learned that a copy of this letter had been reproduced by the Liberal Democrats and used in their Focus newsletter.

Not only had they taken the liberty of reproducing the letter exactly but had also included my name and address without my knowledge or consent. When I contacted those responsible for what I believe to be a gross misuse of local news media and infringement of my civil liberties, I received an answer from Coun Jeanette Sunderland: "Thank you for your e-mail the contents of which I have noted. The material you have identified is correctly set and sourced. Thank you".

It would seem that the local Liberal Democrats are all well and good at shouting about the civil liberties of the Iraqi and Afghan people, among others. But when they see an opportunity to do down a political opponent who has had the cheek to leave their party on a point of principle then the right of ordinary local people like myself who write letters to the Telegraph & Argus can take a back seat no matter how much distress and hurt their actions may cause.
