A FLOOD warning tonight remains in place on a section of the River Thames in the west of the county as water levels continue to rise after recent heavy rain.

The warning from the Environment Agency covers the Thames from Buscot Wick to Shifford, through Buscot, Kelmscott, Radcot, Tadpole Bridge and Chimney.

The warning, the second stage in the agency's three-tier flood system, means flooding is expected and householders and businesses near the river should take immediate precautions.

The agency this evening said: "The River Thames remains very high, but steady and level in the Buscot area. However, the river will remain responsive to further rainfall. The weather forecast is to expect light showers overnight. A drier day is expected tomorrow, with further rainfall tomorrow night."

Several fields in the Shifford area were water-logged when the Mail visited this afternoon.

This morning, the Environment Agency said a number of other Oxfordshire rivers and brooks were subject to flood alerts, meaning people should be on guard against possible flooding. These were:

  • River Cherwell from Cropredy through Banbury and Lower Heyford to Oxford
  • Clanfield Brook at Clanfield
  • River Cole along the county boundary with Wiltshire from Shrivenham to Buscot Wick, including Watchfield and Coleshill
  • River Evenlode from Moreton-in-Marsh to the Wychwoods, Charlbury and Cassington
  • River Glyme at Wootton and Woodstock
