Emmerdale star to light up town
EMMERDALE actor Mark Charnock will switch on Banbury’s Christmas Lights next month, it has been announced.
The actor – who plays Marlon Dingle in the TV soap – will press the button during the ceremony on Sunday, November 24.
Thousands of local people are expected to pack into Bridge Street for the ceremony – supported by The Banbury Cake – on a stage in front of Banbury Town Hall.
The star, who has been in the ITV soap since 1996, will meet fans and sign autographs at the event, organised by Banbury Town Council.
Last year, Coronation Street stars Jack P. Shepherd and Ryan Thomas – who play David Platt and Jason Grimshaw – switched the lights on.
Council Christmas lights committee chairman Tina Wren said: “For many years people from Banbury and the surrounding area have been thrilled by TV celebrities coming to town to switch on the Christmas lights.
“We quickly discovered that soap characters were popular with people of all ages and we try every year to get a well-known face.”
She said: “This year is no exception. Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon Dingle, is one of the most recognisable faces on TV and we are sure he will be a hit with Banbury soap fans.
“Banbury is one of the few towns to have a real celebrity to switch on the Christmas lights and stay within budget. It is something that makes our switch-on very special.”
Joining the actor on stage will be the winner of a contest to find a “Champion of Champions” resident, who has devoted their life to helping others.
Other sponsors include JLD Driver Training, Castle Quay shopping centre, Smiths of Bloxham, Right Results Project Management, JS Auctions, and Acreman’s Arboriculture.
