Police commissioner backs drunk tank idea
9:30am Friday 20th September 2013 in News
POLICE and crime commissioner Anthony Stansfeld has said so-called drunk tanks could be coming to the region.
Mr Stansfeld, PCC for Thames Valley, yesterday came out in support of the Association of Chief Police Officers’ (Acpo) week-long campaign to highlight the effects of alcohol-fuelled crime.
Mr Stansfeld said he was keen to explore the use of initiatives such as drunk tanks – which see drunks locked up to sober up – to help cut the costs of fighting late night alcohol-related crime.
He said: “Taxpayers should not be picking up the bill for drunkenness. Some of my fellow commissioners are already working at a national level on our behalf to find innovative ways to address the adverse effects of the night-time economy.
“One such option is the use of drunk tanks.
“I look forward with interest to hearing more detail on how these initiatives will work, and how they might benefit our communities within Thames Valley.”
