A CAMPAIGN to raise awareness about sexual consent is being launched in Oxford on Monday. The Oxford Safer Communities Partnership project aims to teach people about the issue and the law.

The campaign is being run by Oxford City Council, Thames Valley Probation, and Oxford Sexual Assault & Rape Crisis Centre.

Liz Jones, domestic and sexual abuse co-ordinator at the council, said: “Asking for consent should be a normal part of any sexual relationship. Often it is implied which may lead to misinterpretation.

“We are encouraging young people to actively ask and check that the other person is okay and comfortable with any sexual activity.”

The campaign will be launched at 10am at the Said Business School site in Kennington.

Baljit Ubhey, chief crown prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service said: “Better understanding... of what consent really means and what the pitfalls are, especially when drugs or alcohol is involved, will help to reduce the number of victims.”

The website checkconsent.com will go live on Monday and posters will be spread around the region about the campaign.
