A LIBRARY created at an Oxfordshire school has been shortlisted for a national gong.

Carterton Community College’s library was opened by education expert Sir Tim Brighouse last September.

Now the facility, which has almost 6,000 books, is one of three finalists in the School Library Association’s Library Design Awards.

The school’s former library was changed into an engineering suite by headteacher Niall McWilliams’ predecessor.

Mr McWilliams was eager to bring back the library, so the equipment was moved out and £35,000 spent on converting the facility back to a library.

School librarian Rosemary Stables said: “We designed it with vibrant colours and open shelving so there is lots of flexible space.

“Although it is quite small it feels fairly spacious.”

It will be up against schools in Cambridge and Salisbury. The winner will be announced on October 7.
