Sir – Now that the season of village fetes is over, it’s time to take stock. Many people have enjoyed a fete and, in our affluent county, a lot of money has been raised for predominantly local causes — schools, churches, uniformed organisations and the air ambulance to name but a few.

So here’s a challenge for 2014: how about a percentage of the profits, maybe 20 per cent, being devoted to an overseas charity where the money will go much, much further and where the needs are far, far greater?

Charity may well begin at home but it certainly shouldn’t end there.
