Sir – Many people will doubtless have read your recent long obituary detailing the life of veteran local journalist Colin Fenton (August 22), and while your report faithfully outlined the facts of his life, I and others who knew him well feel it would be nice to complete the personal picture of such a colourful character.

Despite the fact that he left Oxford to live in the Isle of Man some time ago, there are still many in the city who remember him warmly — and vividly. His friends include — unusually perhaps for a journalist — many people who met him initially in a professional capacity, such as the solicitors and barristers whose court cases he reported.

He was a true Oxford one-off: a little eccentric, at times mischievous, funny, kind and all too often eyeing you closely with a boyish twinkle in his eye.
His life, of course, changed forever after the family tragedy almost 30 years ago, but many saw great courage and dignity in the way he tried to come to terms with those events.

It is fitting that, having been a keen young motorcycle racer, he lived his final years in a place that offered such happy memories for him.
