Unemployment in Oxfordshire still growing

OXFORDSHIRE dole queues are lengthening again, bucking the national trend.

For the third month in a row the number of people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance has risen in the county, with figures showing 7,225 people claiming it in February, a rise of 383 on the previous month.

Nationally, the claimant count dropped by 1,500 to 1.54 million.

Experts are struggling to explain the continuing rise, but figures released today show the county’s biggest employer, Oxfordshire County Council, has seen its headcount drop from 20,564 to 20,317 in the last year.

The Top 100 Employers survey published in the Oxford Mail’s sister paper, The Oxford Times, also showed the second biggest employer, Oxford University, cut staff from 18,000 to 16,206.

Small numbers of job losses have been made in the retail sector with the closure of Jessops camera stores and Blockbuster video outlets, but the private sector has not had major cuts in the last few months.

And the figures also show that there are 1,931 fewer claimants than at the same time last year.

Oxfordshire Chamber of Commerce president Nigel Wild said: “It is very difficult to judge exactly why this is happening. Chamber members seem to be stable.”

Overall UK unemployment including those not claiming benefit rose by 7,000 to 2.52 million – the first increase for a year, with growing numbers of jobless aged 16-24.

Yet they want to build tens of thousands of new houses all over Oxfordshire for the mass influx. Where are the Jobs for these people, let alone those already living here.

When are we going to stop deluding ourselves? Oxfordshire is probably one of the counties with the greatest potential for development and growth in the country, but is hamstrung by the most under-performing administration in the land, led by a bunch of incompetents who never assume any responsibility for their failings, and are never held to any account by the local politicos who line their pockets, boots and everything else they can while the financial controllers, auditors and scrutiny officials and committees (appointed by them!) sleep on the job or worse. Schools that are well below the national average, and that consistently under-achieve; a paralytic transport administration; appalling planning blunders; an utterly dysfunctional legal service; and now evidence that even on the economic front the county is bucking the trend because of its chronic failings. Time for a clear-out at the top. What more evidence do we need that the Chief Executive and most of her senior management are quite simply not up to their overpaid jobs?

You need to build the houses so that people who are willing to work and willing to relocate are able to apply for the jobs that are advertised.

In an earlier article a new development near Didcot is expected to create 500 new jobs...
