Mural cover-up

Chiltern Railways is reviewing plans to cover a mural at Banbury Station depicting the town.

Banbury Civic Society and Cherwell Rail Users Group met the operator about plans for a Costa Coffee shop, which would cover up the 2001 mural.

Head of station Chad Collins said all options were being reviewed.

Civic society chairman Rob Kinchin-Smith said: “It is a significant piece of public art.”

The mural is part of our modern heritage - the Costa cafe is simply another way of making money from renting-out the retail unit. Instead, let travellers drink-in the ambience of art, instead of over-priced coffee and cakes! Anyway, with the horrendous price of rail travel these days (especially peak season tickets) why doesn't Chiltern offer those with a ticket free beverages, as a way of saying 'thank you' to the £millions they make from commuters?
