A jealous ex-boyfriend who tried to kill the man he wrongly thought was his former partner's new lover was jailed for life today.

Ian Holland, 33, spied on his ex-girlfriend Lisa Cebral having a late-night cup of tea with Adam Dickson before following him back to his parent's home in Margaret Road, Adderbury, and attacking him.

'It was a horrific offence with a high level of violence used against the victim and it took great courage for the witnesses to come forward'

Det Sgt Steve Duffy

He was convicted of attempted murder last month and sentenced today.

At Oxford Crown Court, Holland was given life but told he would have to serve a minimum of seven years in prison before he was considered for parole.

During his trial, the jury heard that Holland left Mr Dickson lying unconscious on the driveway in a pool of blood after the attack in June last year.

The jury took more that seven-and-a-half hours to find Holland, of Edinburgh Way, Banbury, guilty of attempted murder by a majority of ten to one.

Det Sgt Steve Duffy, of Banbury CID, said: "This was a very difficult investigation that relied on people from the community coming forward to give their evidence. Without them, Ian Holland would not have been brought to justice.

"It was a horrific offence with a high level of violence used against the victim and it took great courage for the witnesses to come forward, for which we are entirely grateful.

"Holland is an obsessive and controlling man and believed his victim had been involved with his ex-partner. He followed him home to his address in Twyford and struck him about the head with a blunt instrument causing very serious skull fractures.

"The victim was in a coma for two weeks following the attack, but has since made a miraculous recovery. However, he is still suffering from the after-effects of the assault more than 12 months on and I wish him all the best with his rehabilitation."

I really dont understand why people comment on these things if you dont know the facts! If he did do it then they should string him up...but they didnt arrest him til 2 days later, theres no evidence...where is the "blunt instrument" that he used? if they found that then they would know for sure.
Its easy for people to say he did it and thats all the court has on him really...why dont the police try to find the weapon used and look for fingerprints. Phorensics these days are amazing and they can tell you the truth. Apart from them, the only people who know the truth is the victim and the offender.

The police and law courts dont just put people in jail for a laugh. Hes in jail because he has been justly put there. For what other reason would any authority wish to incarcerate so much of one persons life. because of spite? i think not. Because they got the facts wrong? Is that not what the legal process has just ruled upon.

the only people who have got what they wanted from this outcome is the former partner lisa cabral.her evidence was unsubstanciated and very untrue.of course she isnt going to paint an ex in a good light, especially after a troubled relationship on both sides.this man has a daughter who will now grow up without her father and listening to a very biased view of him .looking at the evidence presented where is the"weapon" that was used, why were no forensics found on mr holland ,or his vehicle,or any evidence linking him to the scene of the crime!!why was no focus placed on the two people seen leaving the scene by adams own parents, could it be that as soon as mr hollands name was put in the frame by miss cabral that the police had an easy target,a man known to them through previous convictions thus saving themselves a lot of extra legwork???BRITISH JUSTICE !!

you got it spot on there.there was two men stood at the scene when the paramedics arrived, the judge questioned the police on why these two men were not brought in for questioning.so there for whos 2 say it wasn't them.british justice aload of bull****

it's ok saying that british justice is bull****,but what if it was YOUR brother who got maimed or even killed? would you still hold that stance? it was circumstancial evidence, not forensic evidence that got the conviction, they are very different
