Personal Overview - Likely to be a moderate and fairly Euro enthusiastic member of the Conservative Party. He was a member of the Government between 1990 and 1997 known to his Civil Servants as Baldrick. A triple ballot support for Ken Clarke in 1997 helped to preclude the possibility of placement in the Hague Opposition Shadow team. He has a wide range of interests, particularly in Trade & Industry issues where he is a member of the relevant Select Committee. Regarded as a moderate Wet in the Party his education was at Leighton Park School, the Quaker public school. Within Parliament, was prepared to rebel against the party line over the 2003 Iraq War, supporting a motion that the case for war had not been established.
