Children and families will love a special theatre show at The Mill Theatre on Saturday, June 1, when the specialist entertainment company Krazy Kat brings its latest show to town.

The Waving Cat of Japan is an enchanting show signed for children with hearing impairment. It is described as a spectacular, traditional Japanese Bunraku puppet-style theatrical fantasy.

The magical, fun-filled play uses the puppets to tell the story of a wicked sorceress whose beautiful daughter falls in love with a prince. The sorceress gives the prince three seemingly impossible tasks to complete to win her daughter's hand in marriage. The waving cat – a Japanese good luck symbol – offers him help to see his way through the challenges in his bid to marry the sorceress’s daughter.

The Waving Cat of Japan is a fast-moving and funny show, just under an hour long and is suitable for children aged three-seven.

Krazy Kat is a not-for-profit, touring theatre company that specialises in unusual shows for young people. It uses creative and original use of sign language and has established a reputation for elegant, flamboyant and witty productions. In this play, even the puppets sign so youngsters with any hearing loss will be able to enjoy the story to the full.

The Krazy Kat Theatre Company was established in 1982 by Kinny Gardner and Alastair S Macmillan as a fully professional touring company, creating innovative and imaginative visual theatre.

Its patrons are Toyah Willcox, Paul Gambaccini, Mabel Davis CBE and Maddy Prior.

It specialises in introducing young people and their grown-ups to the delights of live visual theatre combining mime, dance, song, Commedia dell Arte, puppets and sign language. The practitioners craft stylish young people’s shows which adults like to see and which all children can enjoy. The highly visual aspect of Krazy Kat’s work has always been its strength, allowing the performers to engage with many audiences where English is not their first language. Kinny was a member of The Scottish Mime Theatre for many years, has a deaf nephew, and is seen by both the deaf and hearing communities as a major innovator within visual theatre using Sign Language Arts.
